Top Score for Aged Zonnebloem Wines

Posted on: 20 March 2020

The longevity of Zonnebloem’s wines were aptly rewarded recently with two of its 2010 vintage wines achieving 90 points scores in the 10-Year-Old Wine Report 2020 released by winemag.co.za.

The 2010 Zonnebloem Lauréat and Shiraz Mourvedre Viognier blended wines were two of only nine red blends which entered to claim the honour. The report saw 74 entries from 33 producers judged according to a 100-point quality scale, all from the 2010 vintage across cultivars and styles.

Red winemaker, Bonny van Niekerk, says the power of these wines to age, lie in their very DNA.

“Our grapes come from the fertile Stellenbosch region where some of our grape producers have been supplying us for over three decades. It is this very consistency and intimate knowledge of the land that allow us to select only the very finest grapes for each cultivar. The vines are lush and flourish along the mountainous terrain and along the various slopes, producing small berries with concentrated flavours. One can’t age a wine if the tannin structure along with fruit profile is not outstanding, and this together with our choice of wood for maturation, allow us to create lasting wines that deliver a taste of history for years to come.”

The2010 Zonnebloem Lauréat is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, and Petit Verdot and matured for 14 months in a combination of 1st and 2nd fill Hungarian and French oak. The wine is elegant and classically styled with plush ripe fruit, a minty spice and harmonious oak.

Spending 12 months in a combination of 1st and 2nd fill Hungarian and French oak, the 2010 Zonnebloem Shiraz Mourvedre Viognier is a complex full-bodied wine with deep layers of soft dark fruit, peppery notes and traces of oak spice derived from the additional aging.

The wines are available to purchase from www.vintoque.co.za the online wine merchant that matures wines in optimal conditions, at R115 for the 2010 Zonnebloem Shiraz Mourvedre Viognier, and R185 for the 2010 Zonnebloem Lauréat.
